The Reality Behind “Many Hats”

Every day, Black women show up wearing countless hats at work, with family and friends, and with personal goals. From the outside, it looks effortless. Behind the scenes, though? It’s easy to run on empty, pushing your own needs aside.

In a recent webinar, actress and Official Brand Partner of BGV, Malinda Williams, joined medical advisor Dr. Nicole Swiner to talk about what it really means to be one woman, with many hats.

For many women, balancing everything comes at the expense of health. Hormonal changes in your 40s and 50 can affect sleep, energy, skin, bone health, and even brain clarity, sometimes subtly until it feels overwhelming.

Reframing How We Show Up

Malinda reframed the idea of “many hats” as a chance to embrace your full self without squeezing into one role. It’s not about being perfect or doing it all; it’s about intentional presence and self-expression.

Dr. Swiner emphasized the risks of the “superwoman complex,” a mindset many Black women adopt, leaving personal wellness last. Small but consistent habits, like pausing to rest, hydrating, moving your body, and taking supplements like collagen or BGV’s targeted vitamins help maintain energy, focus, and overall well-being.

Listening to your body’s signals, like fatigue, irritability, or brain fog, is key to avoiding burnout before it escalates.

Choosing Joy and Support

Wellness isn’t just physical; it can be emotional, too. Both Malinda and Dr. Swiner highlighted the importance of setting boundaries, prioritizing self-care, and surrounding yourself with support. Saying no, asking for help, and protecting your energy are vital steps in managing life’s demands without losing yourself.

The ultimate message was that self-care is not optional. By honoring your health, rest, and mental clarity, you create space to thrive in every hat you wear and enjoy the journey along the way.
